Exhibition

The World Press Photo Exhibition 2024 showcases the world's best photo journalism from the last year. For the latest edition, some 3,800 photographers from 130 countries submitted more than 61,000 photos. The subjects range from refugee tragedies and natural disasters to the joint international effort to save the monarch butterfly from extinction. The exhibition is a look back at the global events of 2023 and allows us to take a step back from the fast-moving news cycle, consider world events from a fresh perspective, and critically reflect on them.

Swiss Press Photo 24 & World Press Photo 2024 - Combined tour

Secondary levels I and II

The two exhibitions present the best press photographs from Switzerland and around the world. One of the most important qualities of a press photo is its truthfulness. How is this achieved and what pictorial languages can be discerned? What does freedom of the press mean in photojournalism? The guided tour illustrates how images generate attention for current events.

A migrant walks atop a freight train known as “The Beast.” Migrants and asylum seekers lacking the financial resources to pay a smuggler often resort to using cargo trains to reach the United States border. This mode of transportation is very dangerous; over the years, hundreds have fallen onto the tracks and have been killed or maimed. Piedras Negras, Mexico, 8 October 2023

Zooming in on world events

In the exhibitions 'World Press Photo 2024' and 'Swiss Press Photo 24', the Swiss National Museum is showcasing some of the world's and Switzerland's best photojournalism and taking a look at the events behind the headlines.

Every spring for some years now, the National Museum Zurich has presented a selection of the best photojournalism from Switzerland and around the world. Once again in 2024, the exhibitions ‘Swiss Press Photo 24’ and ‘World Press Photo 2024’ take a look back at the turbulent last year. As well as showing current events from new and fresh perspectives, the photos take visitors on a journey, for example to a bunker on the Gotthard, where students simulated a space mission in the summer of 2023. Or to daily life in Canada, Mexico and the US, where people are working together and using various means to save the threatened Monarch or Wanderer butterfly from extinction.

In the exhibition ‘Swiss Press Photo’, some 150 pictures will be exhibited in the categories News, Daily life, Swiss stories, People, Sports and World. The winners in the various categories will all be represented at the National Museum with their impressive works. Meanwhile, the ‘World Press Photo‘ exhibition comprises some 140 photos, covering all continents, which will subsequently be exhibited in over 40 other countries. Both exhibitions will also be shown at the Château de Prangins from mid-November 2024.

Whether globally, regionally, or locally, press photographers play an important role in daily news coverage and are still an essential part of the press landscape, even in the age of AI. Maybe they will be even more in demand in the years to come, as gatekeepers of reality.
