Il renvoie à une construction occidentale des soi-disant « images de l’Orient » qui apparaissent aux XVIII^e et XIX^e siècles dans la vie quotidienne, l’art et les sciences. Il s’agit en fait d’une stéréotypisation forgée par le colonialisme, opposant « Orient » et « Occident ». L’Orient est toujours imaginé de manière anhistorique comme un espace exotique « autre ».

Esso rimanda alla costruzione occidentale delle cosiddette «immagini dell’Oriente», che appaiono nel XVIII e XIX secolo nella vita quotidiana, nell’arte nelle scienze. Si tratta di concezioni stereotipate, plasmate dal colonialismo, che costruiscono un’opposizione tra «Occidente» e «Oriente». Quest’ultimo è sempre, astoricamente, immaginato come uno spazio esotico «altro».

The term refers to the Western construction of so-called ‘Oriental imagery’ which found increasing acceptance in the arts and science in the 18th and 19th centuries. Here we are dealing with colonial stereotypes of what the Orient was imagined to be in contrast with Western civilization. Throughout, the Orient is the ahistorical, exotic space of ‘otherness’.
