The event takes place in the context of the exhibition "In the Forest. A Cultural History"

After an input presentation by Professor Thomas Crowther, scientists from the Crowther Lab will discuss the impact of deforestation, as well as reforestation, on the climate. How can global ecological restoration be achieved? Join the conversation with renowned researchers from the Crowther Lab at ETH Zurich. 

The event will be moderated by Mikael Krogerus (Das Magazin). 

Admission is free, reservations are compulsory.

The event is being held in collaboration with the Crowther Lab at ETH Zurich. It will be held in English.

Prof. Dr. Thomas Crowther

Prof. Dr. Thomas Crowther is an ecologist at ETH Zurich and chair of the advisory board to the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. He’s founder of Restor, an online platform to facilitate global restoration, which was selected as a finalist for the Royal Foundation’s 2021 Earthshot Prize.

Dr. Lalasia Bialic-Murphy

Dr. Lalasia Bialic-Murphy is a lead scientist at ETH Zurich’s Crowther Lab. Her research bridges population and community ecology, with an emphasis on comparative demography. A central theme of her work is identifying the environmental factors and phylogenetic relationships that shape population and community dynamics

Dr. Andrea Paz

Dr. Andrea Paz is a postdoctoral researcher at the Crowther Lab at ETH Zurich. She is broadly interested in the patterns of species distributions and the processes behind the generation and persistence of those patterns. Her work focuses on mapping diversity patterns and understanding the relationships between environments and the distribution of biodiversity on Earth.

Dr. Daisy Dent

Dr. Daisy Dent’s research focuses on the effects of changing land-use patterns on tropical forest diversity and ecosystem function. As a lead scientist at Crowther Lab at ETH Zurich, her team investigates how deforestation and forest fragmentation modifies the composition of tropical tree and bird communities and the resulting impacts on ecosystem functioning.

Dr. Fidel Chiriboga

Dr. Fidel Chiriboga is the Global Experiments Project Manager for Crowther Lab’s Global Experiments Network (GEN). Based at ETH Zurich, GEN partners with restoration projects globally to test key elements behind resilient forest restoration and to monitor socio-environmental outcomes from past efforts. The ultimate aim is to translate scientific insight into research-based recommendations for best practices and long-term forest viability

Moderator Mikael Krogerus

Mikael Krogerus is an editor at "Das Magazin". He previously worked as a copywriter for various advertising agencies and was a reporter for NZZ Folio. Born in Finland, he is a graduate of the Kaospilot School in Denmark and author of the international bestseller "The Decision Book".

The exhibition

Key-Visual der Ausstellung "Im Wald"

The forests – used by people for centuries – have faced increasing destruction since the 19th century on account of industrialisation. Figures such as Paul Sarasin and later on Bruno Manser came forward and campaigned for the protection of the forests. The exhibition shows our relationship with the forest through representation in literature and art: once exaggerated by the romantics as a safe haven from civilisation, artists’ depictions of the forest are today dominated by the subject of climate change.
